Once you know those you can transition to any package and be comfortable pretty quickly (except perhaps Lightwave - yes, it still exists and I'm still scratching my head) And you can learn all those concepts for free inside Blender.

You can but there's a better choice. While most packages can do most things, there is the pain of it that can sway your decision. Some will come up short in some tasks and some in others but these can't-get-there-from-here tasks are usually edge of the cliff stuff and even then there are usually 3rd party software plugs ins that can fill in the gaps. It has come a long way so before discounting it have a look at Ian Hubberts work done in blender. I'm not sure anyone knows what Blender's sweet spot is yet other than the obvious: it's free. C4D's is motion graphics (although it is perfectly capable of doing high end film animation and FX etc but the industry still leans toward Maya and Houdini, with good reason).
